About, Causes, Symptoms & Treatment

Hyperdontia is a condition where extra teeth develop beyond the normal set of primary or permanent teeth. These extra teeth, called supernumerary teeth, can appear anywhere in the mouth.
While some people experience no symptoms, others may have crowding, delayed eruption of permanent teeth, or cosmetic concerns.
The exact cause of hyperdontia is not fully understood, but it appears to have a genetic component. It may be associated with certain syndromes and developmental conditions.
Hyperdontia affects approximately 1-4% of the population and is more common in males than females.
Many people with hyperdontia experience no symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they may include crowding of teeth, delayed eruption of permanent teeth, pain or discomfort, difficulty chewing, and cosmetic concerns about appearance.
Extra teeth can be classified as mesiodens (between upper central incisors), paramolars (near molars), or distomolars (behind wisdom teeth).
Treatment typically involves extraction of the supernumerary teeth, followed by orthodontic treatment if needed to correct alignment issues. Not all cases require treatment—it depends on whether the extra teeth cause problems.
”My son had an extra tooth that was causing problems. Imagine Dental explained everything clearly and made the extraction process smooth and painless.
