Preventive Dental Care - Preventive Dentistry

As the old saying goes, “a stitch in time saves nine.” Preventing dental problems before they start can help you avoid more complex, invasive, and expensive dental treatment needs later on. Our team at Imagine Dental is proud to provide preventive family dentistry in Phoenix and Ahwatukee to keep your family’s smiles looking and feeling their best.

This quick guide explains what preventive dentistry is, why it’s important, and what you can do to prevent dental problems at home.

What Is Preventive Dentistry?

Preventive dentistry is an approach to dental care that focuses on maintaining your oral health so you can avoid issues like cavities and gum disease. Preventive dental services include:

While regular dental cleanings and check-ups are essential for kids and adults, your habits at home can make the biggest difference.

Preventive Dental Home Care Basics

Our team will provide tailored home care guidance for your family based on each family member’s age, oral health status, overall physical health, and ability. We’ll recommend the best products and techniques to make it as easy as possible to keep your teeth strong and healthy at home.

Here are a few basics we’ll review during your preventive dental visits.

1. Brushing

Brushing your teeth is the foundation of any oral home care routine. Brushing should start as soon as a child’s first tooth comes in. You can use a damp washcloth to clean a baby’s gums and teeth until they can tolerate regular brushing.

A good toothbrushing routine includes:

  • Brushing at least twice every day
  • Brushing for at least two minutes each time
  • Using a toothbrush with soft bristles
  • Replacing your toothbrush at least every three months

If your toothbrush bristles start to look frayed over time, you may be brushing too aggressively. Be sure to avoid hard scrubbing and use good toothbrushing technique. Using an electric toothbrush can be helpful, especially for people with limited dexterity.

2. Flossing

Brushing goes a long way to keep bacteria under control, but even the best brushing technique doesn’t clean the areas between your teeth. That’s where floss comes in!

  • Floss at least once every day
  • Gently work the gums below the gum line but avoid sawing into the gums
  • Curve the floss in a C-shape against the tooth surface and gently scrub up and down
  • Clean the side of one tooth at a time

If you have trouble using traditional floss, let us know. We can help you practice good technique or recommend alternatives like floss picks or a water flosser to make it easy for you!

3. Use the Right Products

Removing bacteria is just one piece of the puzzle. Products like toothpaste and mouthwash offer added benefits like strengthening your enamel, killing any germs left behind after your brush and floss, and addressing issues like tooth sensitivity.

Our team can recommend specific products that are best suited for your unique needs. In general, we recommend:

  • Avoiding abrasive products like charcoal or whitening toothpaste
  • Using fluoride products for cavity prevention
  • Choosing alcohol-free fluoride or antiseptic mouthwash
  • Asking your dentist about prescription products when needed

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children should start using a tiny smear (about the size of a grain of rice) of fluoride toothpaste as soon as their first tooth appears. Once they’re big enough to spit toothpaste out (around age three), they can start using a pea-sized amount. However, if you’re worried about using fluoride toothpaste for your baby or toddler, be sure to choose a fluoride-free option that contains xylitol, which can also help with cavity prevention.

4. Eat a Tooth-Friendly Diet

You’re probably aware that some foods can hurt your teeth. Frequent snacking on sugary and starchy food increases acid by feeding cavity-causing bacteria, and highly acidic foods can erode and weaken your enamel.

Limiting how frequently you expose your teeth to sugars and acids is a great way to reduce your cavity risk, but there are also lots of foods that can actively support better oral health!

  • Dairy products provide calcium and phosphorus to strengthen your enamel.
  • Crunchy produce can boost saliva flow, scrape away plaque, and massage your gums.
  • Foods rich in vitamins C, E, and D help to support healing and minimize inflammation.
  • Natural fluoride sources like black and green tea reduce cavity risk.
  • Polyphenol-rich foods like raisins, dark chocolate, and coffee can fight bacteria in the mouth.

Staying hydrated supports healthy saliva flow, which prevents discomfort and oral health risks. Healthy saliva is critical to good oral health, so don’t forget to drink plenty of water. Especially here in Arizona, where it’s easy to become dehydrated fast!

5. Avoid Damaging Habits

Habits like smoking, chewing tobacco, and heavy alcohol use can dry out the tissues of the mouth, impair healing, and increase your risks for periodontal disease, oral cancer, and other problems.

Biting your nails or chewing on non-food items can wear down your enamel and lead to chips and cracks. Similarly, grinding your teeth or clenching your jaw can increase oral health risks and lead to chronic discomfort.

If you play sports, lift weights, or grind your teeth at night, be sure to ask our team about getting a custom mouth guard in Phoenix or Ahwatukee! A well-made guard is a great way to prevent oral health problems and dental emergencies.
