We all want to be in the no-cavity club. And for parents, keeping our kids’ teeth healthy is a top priority. One of the best ways to prevent cavities, especially in children, is with fluoride. While using fluoride toothpaste daily is a must, we can boost its cavity-fighting powers with fluoride varnish after routine cleanings. It’s quick, painless, and works like a protective shield for your teeth. Plus, it can reverse tooth sensitivity!
At Imagine Dental, we’re committed to providing the most effective preventive dentistry, including fluoride treatments in Phoenix and Ahwatukee. Whether you’re learning about it for the first time or just wondering if it’s right for your family, here’s everything you need to know about fluoride varnish and how it helps prevent cavities before they start.
What Is Fluoride Varnish?
Fluoride varnish is a sticky, tooth-strengthening coating that keeps fluoride directly on the tooth surfaces for several hours. This gives your enamel much more opportunity to incorporate this amazing mineral supplement, reversing the earliest stages of tooth decay.
Getting fluoride varnish is a simple and completely non-invasive process. A member of our team paints it onto your teeth, where it hardens quickly when it comes in contact with saliva. Then you can go about your normal routine and brush it off in the evening.
We usually recommend it during regular dental check-ups, especially for children, but adults can benefit too! It’s also a great final step after whitening treatments, which can leave your teeth feeling sensitive.
How Does Fluoride Prevent Cavities?
Fluoride is a natural mineral that is found in groundwater in many areas of the US. In fact, most groundwater in Arizona contains natural fluoride! It’s an important nutrient that can improve bone strength and helps protect teeth in a few powerful ways. Here’s how it works:
1. It Makes the Mineral Structure of Enamel Stronger.
To really understand how fluoride protects your teeth, we need to start by understanding what enamel actually is. All the bones in your body have hydroxyapatite, a type of mineral crystal that gives bones and teeth their hardness. Tooth enamel has it in a higher proportion than other types of bone.
Fluoride turns minerals in enamel into fluorapatite, which is much denser than hydroxyapatite. Because it makes the minerals in your teeth so tightly packed together, fluoride makes it harder for acid (which is what causes cavities) to damage the teeth.
Think of it like a handful of twigs. If they’re loose, they’re easier to break. But if you pack a whole bunch of them into a tight fist, they’re much stronger. That’s what fluoride does for your teeth!
2. It Reverses the Early Stages of Tooth Decay.
Before a cavity becomes a cavity, it starts off as a weak spot in your enamel. Acids from food and bacteria break down the minerals in enamel. This is called decalcification. It can appear as chalky white stains on the teeth, but you often can’t see it between the teeth or in the deep grooves in your molars.
Without replacing these lost minerals, the decalcification will grow deeper into the tooth structure, eventually reaching the dentine under your enamel. At that point, your tooth will need a dental filling to prevent the cavity from reaching the nerve and causing serious problems later.
But if we can remineralize the tooth with fluoride, we can build the minerals back up and reverse the damage before a true cavity forms. Fluoride varnish is an incredibly effective way to do that.
3. It Slows Down Bacteria.
Fluoride can directly fight the bacteria that cause tooth decay. It does this in several ways, such as affecting enzymes they need (that we don’t) to digest food. It also causes bacterial cells to become more acidic and damages their membranes, preventing them from growing without affecting our own healthy cells.
Fluoride’s antimicrobial action works best in higher concentrations and when it can sit on the tooth surface for a prolonged time. Which is exactly what fluoride varnish provides! It’s a great way to kill off any lingering bacteria after your dental cleaning and prevent new bacteria from growing back as quickly.
Is Fluoride Varnish Safe?
Yes, fluoride varnish is safe when used as directed by a dental professional. It’s approved by the American Dental Association (ADA), the CDC, and dental associations around the world. It’s especially helpful for young children and people with a higher risk of cavities, such as those with acid reflux.
We use a very tiny amount of the varnish to create a thin layer that hardens quickly and stays on the teeth. It’s not possible to swallow too much of the varnish with the amount we use, making it safe even for toddlers and young kids.
We understand how scary some people make fluoride sound. However, it is one of the most thoroughly and heavily researched medical interventions in the world and the research proves time and again that fluoride is both safe and essential to long-term oral health. If you feel anxious about fluoride treatments, don’t hesitate to talk to us about your concerns!
What Are the Disadvantages of Fluoride Varnish?
While fluoride varnish is very beneficial, there are a few things to keep in mind:
1. It Can Change How Your Teeth Feel Temporarily
Right after you get fluoride varnish, your teeth may feel a little sticky or fuzzy, not that super-smooth feeling you expect after a cleaning. But once the varnish wears off, your teeth will feel even smoother and stronger than before.
2. It Can Be Uncomfortable (But It’s Quick!)
Fluoride varnish has a thick texture and a slightly sticky feel. It might be a little uncomfortable, especially for kids, but the application is quick and the benefits are long-lasting.
3. It Might Stick to Your Toothbrush Later
When you brush it off later that day or the next morning, some of the varnish might get stuck in your toothbrush bristles. That’s why many people use a cheap, disposable toothbrush just to remove the varnish. It’s also a great excuse to replace your old toothbrush, which you should do every 3 months anyway!
4. You’ll Need to Watch What You Eat for a While
After you get fluoride varnish, we’ll recommend that you avoid hot foods, crunchy snacks, and brushing for several hours. While that’s a little limiting in the short term, the payoff is long-term freedom to enjoy your favorite foods without worrying about cavities.
5. It’s an Added Cost (That Prevents Bigger Expenses!)
Some dental insurance plans cover fluoride varnish, especially for kids. But even if it’s an out-of-pocket expense, it’s much cheaper than fillings, crowns, or extractions down the road. Think of it as an investment in your smile’s future.
